Why SurgMan exists

If you've ever been on call and needed the NICE threshold for referring a suspected testicular torsion, or what GIRFT actually recommends for handling a neck-of-femur fracture, you'll know the guidance exists — somewhere. It's just scattered across a dozen PDFs, three different trust intranets, and whatever your registrar happens to remember from exam revision. None of that is much use to you at 3am with a bleep going off.

SurgMan distils it down. Each app takes one specialty and pulls together everything an SHO actually reaches for on a shift: the presentations you'll see most often and how to work them up or refer them, structured clerking proformas for common admissions, the bedside procedures and classification systems you're expected to know, and a clear signpost to the real NICE, GIRFT, and national society guidance behind each of them — so you're never more than a tap away from the source.

The presentations you'll actually see

The common calls for that specialty, with how to work each one up and where it needs to go next — ward, registrar, or theatre.

Clerking, procedures & classifications

Structured clerking proformas, step-by-step bedside procedures, and the classification systems you're expected to know cold.

Guidance, signposted

NICE, GIRFT, and the relevant national specialty society, condensed and cited — so you can always trace it back to the source.

Consent, taken seriously

Key operative procedures for the specialty — the real indication for surgery, and the risks worth walking a patient through, ordered from common to rare.

Install it as an app

Each specialty above installs to your home screen separately, so it opens full-screen with its own icon — exactly like an app from the store. It takes about ten seconds.

iPhone & iPad (Safari)

  1. Open the app you want (e.g. VascMan) in Safari — installing only works from Safari, not Chrome or another browser.
  2. Tap the Share icon in the toolbar (the square with an arrow pointing up).
  3. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.
  4. Tap Add — the icon appears on your home screen, ready to open in one tap.

Android (Chrome)

  1. Open the app you want in Chrome.
  2. Tap the menu in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap Add to Home screen (or Install app, if Chrome offers it directly).
  4. Confirm — the icon is added to your home screen and opens full-screen from then on.

Each specialty is a separate install, so your home screen only fills up with the ones you actually use.
